Pride is inordinate esteem of oneself. It is inordinate because it is contrary to the truth. It is the will to be considered better than we really are.

Avarice is greed, the inordinate love of earthly things, especially money. It is inordinate when we are not guided by reason or need, when we go to unusual lengths to get material goods, or when we are miserly in giving. Greed short-sightedly neglects permanent reward in heaven for temporary rewards in this life.

Lust is a disordered emphasis on animality over the moral and spiritual dimension of our lives. Evil desire (usually associated with the sex drive) or unbridled lust leads to sin and produces death. We conquer Lust through the practice of chastity.

Envy is the feeling of displeasure produced by witnessing or hearing of the advantage or prosperity of others; this evil sense always attaches to this. We conquer envy through the practice of brotherly love.

Wrath, or anger, is emotional violence. Brief anger at frustration is normal and not sinful. So is righteous anger at one’s own sins or the sins of others. Excess and lack of control make anger sinful. Jesus said, Mt 5:21 “You have heard that it was said to the men of old, ’You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment.” We conquer wrath by the practice of meekness.

Gluttony is excessive and uncontrolled preoccupation with food and drink. It includes excessive and uncontrolled eating and drinking, excessive liking for exquisite food and drink, and excessive fastidiousness about food and drink. Excessive drinking is a venial sin if it causes partial loss of reason, and mortally sinful if it causes complete loss of reason.

Sloth, or laziness, is the decision not to fulfill a significant part of one’s responsibilities. A husband who refuses to go to Mass, work for a living, participate in raising his children, or protect his home is slothful. A wife who refuses to go to Mass, bear children, raise her children, or create a good home environment is slothful. An active and functional family that has already been to Sunday Mass may licitly spend Sunday afternoon watching a football game because its responsibility for the day has already been accomplished.

Rebellion Against God

Sin is rebellion against God.

CCC 1849 “Sin is an offense against reason, truth, and right conscience; it is failure in genuine love for God and neighbor caused by a perverse attachment to certain goods.”

CCC 1850 “Sin sets itself against God’s love for us and turns our hearts away from it. … Sin is thus love of oneself even to contempt of God.”

We sin only against God. King David wrote, Ps 51:4 “Against Thee, Thee only have I sinned.” Sin separates us from God because He wants what is best for us, while we have chosen what is worst for us. Sin separates us from ourselves because it destroys our self-respect. Sin separates us from the people we love because we can never be at one with them if we hurt or use them. And sin separates us from life because it makes us closed-in and self-centered.

Catholic teaching recognizes two types of actual sin: venial (Latin: venia, pardon) and mortal (Latin: morte, death).

The Four Essential Elements of a Sin

A law is involved, such as a moral law.

God is offended; the divine dimension is always present when we sin.

Sin is disobedience. We resist God’s grace and disobey His commands.

The disobedience is deliberate. We know that something is contrary to God’s law but freely disobey anyway.

St. Paul explained sin: Rom 5:12-14 “Therefore as sin came into the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all men sinned – sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam.”

The original sin came into the world through Adam.

There are seven capital sins and they are pride, avarice, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony and sloth. All the sins we commit are said to flow from these seven deadly sins.

It is a season for reflection and taking stock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days. All churches that have a continuous history extending before AD 1500 observe Lent. The ancient church that wrote, collected, canonized, and propagated the New Testament also observed Lent, believing it to be a commandment from the apostles. (See The Apostolic Constitutions, Book V, Section III.)

Lent is a forty-day period before Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday.
